Hurricane Matthew brings devastation to N. Florida

Matthew’s track

The worst storm to hit the United States since Hurricane Katrina, slammed into the east coast on Friday, Oct 7 2016. The governors of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina urged millions of people living in the evacuation zones to leave. After about a decade of very low hurricane activity, people have forgotten how immensely destructive storms like this can be. In total, the storm killed 49 people in the US, including 28 in North Carolina, 12 in Florida, 3 in Georgia, 4 in South Carolina, and 2 in Virginia.  Early estimates indicate total economic losses of at least US $4–6 billion in the southeastern United States, prior to the widespread flooding in North Carolina. According to the National Hurricane Center, Matthew is the strongest hurricane to affect northeast Florida since the 1898 Georgia hurricane. In Jacksonville, FL it caused major sand dune damage, flooding in the St. Johns River, and destroyed many properties and knocked out power for nearly 250,000 electrical customers.

In one of these damaged areas is a small town called Keystone Heights Florida. This town of about 1350 (US Census 2010), Keystone Heights is located in northeast Florida in the southwest corner of Clay County, and about 50 miles from the Atlantic Ocean.

Flashback: November 2015. Temporary Warehouse Houston erects a 66’ by 182’ (12,012 square feet) clear span structure. This configuration has one 16’ by 15’ overhead door and two personnel doors. The structure was constructed on an asphalt base.

October 7 2106: As the hurricane passed within 55 miles of our client’s Temporary Warehouse structure, the winds gusts were in excess of 60 mph and over 4 inches of rain fell. After the storm passed, our client reported NO damage to the structure.
